Even though many businesses operate online I still get confused looks when I tell people what I do. “You’re a virtual what?”

Virtual assistance is nothing new in the online world, but it is becoming a more popular field due to an increase in demand. Many entrepreneurs, small business owners, and solopreneurs are realizing they can’t do ALL THE THINGS… but those things still need to get done. They NEED to delegate. So what’s a business owner to do? Especially if they can’t afford an employee or aren’t working out of a brick-and-mortar storefront?
They hire a virtual assistant. A virtual assistant (usually shortened to VA) is someone who supports your business behind-the-scenes. It’s a very general term that can include a variety of tasks… from administrative support to social media management to website maintenance. VAs are typically scrappy, quick learners who have a penchant for organization and systems. Basically, they are who you want to hire first when you need to bring on help!
On being a virtual assistant
Personally, I became a virtual assistant after I wanted out of the 9-5 office life, but still wanted (and needed!) to use my skills. I enjoy being an administrative assistant; I thrive on being the go-to to support the operations of a business, so I did some research on how I could do that remotely… and lo and behold there appears the title VIRTUAL ASSISTANT!
One of the best parts about being a VA is that it’s a win-win for everyone! My clients aren’t paying for overhead costs like equipment, office space or supplies. They don’t need to put in for taxes, health insurance, or retirement. They pay for the work they need, and that’s it! No wasted hours on the clock. Moreover, I get the benefit of having a flexible schedule, working from home, and choosing who I work with.

signs you need a vA
If you’re unsure about whether or not you need a virtual assistant for your business, ask yourself a few questions:
- Am I working nights and weekends?
- Do I have tasks on my list that have been there for weeks?
- Am I using my time to build my business or is it being eaten up by admin tasks?
If you’re stopping your real work to handle the admin work, if you’re losing your passion for running your business, or if your family complains that they don’t see you enough—then you need to read the signs! These are key indicators that it’s time for you to get some support! Are you ready to take the plunge?
